Overview
Blue Note Entertainment Group, renowned for its iconic live music venues, recently embarked on a groundbreaking technical initiative to facilitate real-time, geographically distributed performances. Leveraging cutting-edge AVoIP technology, the project successfully enabled musicians in multiple U.S. cities to perform together as if they were on the same stage.
At the heart of this achievement was the Patton FPX6000 Dante AV Gateway, a key product now distributed by AVD.
Challenge
Musical performances rely heavily on visual and non-verbal cues—subtle gestures, nods, and expressions that help musicians stay synchronised. With artists spread across New York, Nashville, and Washington DC, the challenge was to enable live collaboration over the internet without compromising the immediacy or quality of interaction.
The primary technical hurdle was latency—the delay in audio and video transmission that can disrupt performance timing. Each location’s network introduced unique latency characteristics, requiring customised adjustments to ensure synchronisation.
Solution
To overcome these challenges, Blue Note worked with a team of engineers to implement a robust Dante AV-based AVoIP solution. The configuration included:
- Patton FPX6000 Dante AV AVoIP Gateways for video encoding and decoding at 1080P/30FPS
- Bolin D220 Dante AV Cameras for live video capture
- Dante-enabled mixing consoles at each location for precise audio alignment
- Local 1Gbps Ethernet networks to interconnect all AV components
- 720P/60FPS stage-side video monitors to provide performers with real-time visual feedback
The pilot performance took place in June 2021 at Sony Hall in New York City. Vocal and guitar performances were based in New York, with drums and piano in Nashville, and bass in Washington DC. Each site was fine-tuned with bespoke latency settings to ensure seamless synchronisation.
Results
TPatton’s integration of Dante AV technology enabled artists in multiple cities to perform in perfect synchrony—seeing and hearing each other in real time, without the constraints of location. This solution preserved the essential dynamics of live performance, proving that with the right tools, distance is no longer a barrier to collaboration.
For distributors, this case study is more than a technical success—it’s a powerful proof point. It shows that Patton’s AVoIP solutions aren’t just innovative; they’re commercially viable, in demand, and ready to meet the needs of today’s evolving AV market.
